Alleghany County Jail Roster Limits
The main local custody fact is a gap, not a portal. No official public Alleghany Regional Jail roster or current-inmate database was located. The sheriff's inmate information page provides jail rules and says users can search for an individual to see if they are incarcerated, but the linked search is the VADOC offender locator, not a live local booking roster. Current local custody therefore begins with Alleghany Regional Jail at 540-965-1776.
That lack of a roster changes the page structure. Alleghany County inmate records should be treated as a set of access channels: the jail phone for a current booking, a FOIA request for a public booking record, Virginia VINE for custody notifications, Virginia court searches for charges filed after booking, and VADOC for state custody after sentencing or transfer. Federal and immigration searches belong to BOP, USMS, and ICE channels.
The sheriff's inmate page is the official local starting point for jail rules and the VADOC link: Alleghany Sheriff's Office inmate information.
Use Alleghany County Inmate Records
Because there is no located local roster, the safest lookup sequence is a fallback chain. Start with the channel that owns the current custody record. Then branch to courts, state corrections, federal custody, or immigration systems only when those facts match the case. A person just arrested in Covington, Clifton Forge, Iron Gate, or by a state officer may not be active for deposit or vendor purposes until booking is complete.
- Call Alleghany Regional Jail at 540-965-1776 and ask whether the person is currently in local custody.
- Allow at least one hour after a new arrest or court return before expecting intake identifiers to be active.
- Ask what agency made the arrest, whether bond is set, and whether any hold or detainer blocks release.
- Use the county FOIA officer for a public booking record or booking photo request when phone confirmation is not enough.
- Search Virginia court systems after the case appears to see formal charges, hearings, and status.
- Use VADOC, BOP, or ICE only for the custody type each system actually covers.
Virginia VINE adds a notification layer. VADOC's VINE material says local and regional jail offenders can be searched at VINELink or by calling 1-800-467-4943, with notifications for release, transfer, death, escape, and return from escape.
Alleghany County Lookup Search Fields
The local jail did not provide a public search-field table, so the best rendered table comes from the VADOC locator used by the sheriff page. Use it for state custody, state supervision, local or regional jail inmates under VADOC authority, CCAP, and related state categories. It is not a full substitute for the local jail desk.
| Field Label | Type | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| First Name | Text | Yes for name search | Used with last name. |
| Last Name | Text | Yes for name search | Required when using a name search. |

| Disclaimer checkbox | Checkbox | Yes | Must be accepted before search. |
Alleghany County Inmate Profile Fields
For a local booking record, ask for the public fields that identify custody and court status. Do not assume that housing unit, medical data, or investigative detail will be released. Virginia FOIA supports public access, but juvenile, sealed, expunged, active-investigation, security, and privacy limits may apply.

Alleghany County Jail and DOC Records
Alleghany County inmate records split at the custody line. The regional jail handles booking and local custody. The Virginia Department of Corrections locator handles state prisoners, supervisees, institutional hospitals, local or regional jail inmates under VADOC authority, and CCAP participants. BOP and ICE are separate systems. They should not be used to explain ordinary Alleghany jail custody unless a federal or immigration fact is present.
| Custody Type | Where to Look | What It Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Pretrial or local sentence | Alleghany Regional Jail phone, FOIA, VINE | Current local booking and custody status. |
| Sentenced state prisoner | VADOC locator | State custody, release date, and supervision category when public. |
| Federal sentenced inmate | BOP inmate locator | Federal custody from 1982 to present. |
| Immigration detainee | ICE ODLS | ICE detention location by A-number or exact biographical search. |

Booking Process in Alleghany County
Alleghany Regional Jail books inmates, and the sheriff inmate page gives a local timing rule: if an individual was just brought in by law enforcement or from court, allow at least one hour before attempting to leave money. The process can take longer depending on intake workload. Until booking is complete, the person's information may not be active for deposit, phone, mail, or lookup purposes.
The practical sequence is arrest or court remand, intake acceptance, creation of a jail record in the jail management or LIDS system, search and property processing, medical screening, photo and fingerprints, classification, and housing. The state LIDS contact list identifies the jail's public-safety system as ID Networks IBR+ Public Safety System. Public sources do not list housing unit names, and housing can be withheld for safety.
After arrest, the magistrate may admit bail or commit the person to jail. The county brochure says magistrates issue warrants, admit bail, and commit charged persons to jail. If the person is booked on a warrant, ask whether the warrant is local or from another jurisdiction and which court issued it.
Alleghany County Visitation Records
Visitation is tied to Pay Tel/Homewav and InteleVISIT. The sheriff inmate page says off-site video visitation is allowed daily from 9 AM to 10 PM. On-site video visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance through Pay Tel/Homewav, and the same page lists Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday from 9 AM to 10 PM, with no Monday or Friday on-site visitation. A 2022 printable guide has narrower windows, so confirm the current rule with the jail before travel.
| Visit Type | Schedule | Rule |
|---|---|---|
| Off-site video | Daily, 9 AM-10 PM | Pay Tel/Homewav registration and approval. |
| On-site video | Sun, Tue, Wed, Thu, Sat, 9 AM-10 PM | Schedule 24 hours ahead through Pay Tel/Homewav. |
| Professional/confidential | By request/sign-in | Attorney and similar visitors sign in at main control room entrance. |
Contact Alleghany County Inmates
Non-legal mail uses a scanning center, not the Covington street address. Address non-legal mail to Alleghany Regional Jail, Inmate Name, Inmate ID, Facility ID Number 5004, PO Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419. Legal mail goes to the Covington jail address and must be marked legal mail. The policy says physical non-legal mail is scanned to the inmate tablet and then destroyed.
Inmates have daily phone access after housing areas are cleaned. Phones turn off at 11 PM. Calls are charged to the called party, and the provider establishes a 10-minute limit. The jail does not accept incoming inmate calls, and messages are not given except emergency death-in-family type situations. Pay Tel account setup is handled through Pay Tel, and inmates may purchase phone cards.
Alleghany County Commissary Funds
Alleghany moved to OASIS Commissary and JailATM funding options in 2025. The official inmate-money sheet lists several deposit channels. Confirm custody and the inmate ID before sending funds, because a new booking may not be active until intake is complete.
| Deposit Method | Details | Fee / Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lobby kiosk / ATM | OASIS/Tech Friends kiosk in the main lobby, available 24/7 | Valid ID required; fee applies. |
| JailATM | Online account through JailATM | Fee applies. |
| Phone deposit | 877-810-0914 | Fee applies. |
| Money order by mail | Send to 268 West Main Street, Covington, VA 24426 | Free service; no cash or personal letters. |
| Business office window | Not accepted | The official sheet says money is not accepted there. |
Note: Confirm booking completion with the jail before sending funds, mail, or visit requests for a newly arrested person.
